My Ride: 2006 M5
Thumbs up

If you stand in front of your engine bay with the hood open and the engine running, you may hear two sounds...

(1) a clicking diesel like sound from the front of the valve covers or
(2) just the tapping of the injectors

Please let me know what model year you have and whether you have the vanos clicking sound or not.

My pre-owned 2006 M5 had a clicking sound from the vanos area from day 1. I thought this was normal. I just had a complete vanos overhaul (new pump and solenoids, tested lines for leaks, bleeding, etc.) to address a really noticable vanos noise problem that was intermittent. However, now that its complete, the BMW techs think its still too noisey. I think it sounds like it always did when it was running normally.

The odd thing is that a brand new 08 M5 on the lot has absolutely no vanos clicking at all... it's dead silent except for the tapping from the injectors. This is what leads them to believe my car is abnormally noisy.

So help me understand what's normal.

2006 M5 with 120K miles always maintained fair noise more right bank (passenger side) does come and go a bit (suspect air in system) loader than I like and I'm considering a pull down to see for my self...

Anyone ever do a self inspection and rebuild

Sounds like a Vanos issue, it makes noise when going bad on either side. Its not a cheap fix, I had my left bank replaced it was making noise

Just the V-10, ready and willing. You have a problem if you hear either of your choices, I'm afraid.
