Looks right to me. That's where most normal people put there shifter.
Perhaps some clarification might help.
I'm referring to the design of the shift knob. Not very attractive

OK, now I know what you mean by, "looks out of place", and I agree.
To me, the shifter looks very plain. I'm driving a manual transmission e60 myself and at least the shifter looks better. It's got the aluminum trim around the top and covers the back half of the shift knob as well. It matches very well with the aluminum of the iDrive dial.

AC_S5,
Eric just leaves himself open to these one-liners. And, when I see them I go in for the kill.

I agree and think I've made similar comment about this. Alas, they are following with tradition I guess as all M model shift knobs are quite plain. The shift knob in regular bmws look better than that. They should have a shift knob to match with the rest of the trim. Either aluminum or wood.

Im not very fond of my manual shifter also (545i). I cant wait to put a short shifter and put a more attractive shift knob on it.

After seeing the pics of this ///M5, I noticed that our regular 5 series with the sports package has that silvery part on the bottom/side of the steering wheel whereas the ///M5s do not. Just today when I was receiving in an 06 ///M5 I noticed the same thing, but thought to myself maybe it was just on the 06 models, but I guess not. Hey that's pretty cool, something that we have exclusive that the ///M does not

Edit: But I guess I would rather have the colored stitching and bumps rather than the silver thingy, or would I? Would you?
