Quick one. I drove the car last night I saw the oil level meter is now blank. It used to show 1.2 or something. I am at work so I can't check the manual. Does it simply mean low oil level or is it an indication or something more? I've only done 1000 miles in the last couple of months so burning that much oil looks excessive (I could be wrong)

If anyone has an answer to hand it'll be great otherwise I'll wait till I get home or call a dealer later.

Cheers

Another one of those self solved faults. I got home Friday evening to check the fault and the car is displaying the oil level again. Other than the display being blank there were no further oil warnings on the car. I can only assume its a temporary sensor fault. Strange.

Does the display shows 2 horizontal dashes like this: - - ? I bleive that means its trying to take a reading but I think the oil has to be warm and the car not moving. Next time you return from your drive let the car idle in the driveway for about 3 minutes and it will take a reading. There is also a way to reset the guage if it gets stuck (ie after a month of hard driving it hasn't changed) by holding the check / BC buttons on the turn indicator stalk it will force a "refresh" and you will see a little clock icon in the display while it takes the reading. I forget the actual sequence for the check/BC button but check the manual.

These cars do burn oil so you need to stay on top of it.

cheers for the explanation.

Another odd thing occured the other night I got in the car and the computer had lost all its route data and the clock reset. All strange. Looks like it must have entered a reset menu or something.

I've read in a few places that the V10 likes to drink a bit of oil. I'm sure there are a lot of recommended ones for the car. I'll worry about that when the time comes.

The only little job I want to do is give the wheels a good clean. The rear alloys have slight stains and where the weights have been removed from behind the spokes the stick plastic is still on there. I might remove the wheels give them a good clean (will need to research if lacquer can be used). Might as well have them rebalanced whilst I'm at it.

The dash lines appear when it can not gain a reading. 3 things needed for proper readings normal temp, idle speed, and close to level condition. I tried to
check the oil on a slope and it would not read -- appears. Use the BC button to force the system to check the current oil status. Display oil status, press and hold BC button for till the gauge changes to the clock icon - about 3 to 4 seconds, ( all 3 above items must be met ) it will than give you the current level. Use iDrive to watch this too. Page 208 in the manual gives it all to us !
BMW why not a DIP STICK ???
Even my aircraft engine has a dip stick and it is a dry sump system!!!! Lycoming IO 540.

I was driving today and from my gauge saying my oil was half full it was all of a sudden at -0.5 with a huge warning on the nav! It was at full 3 weeks ago... I'm going to service tomorrow.
