Well.....expensive. About $1200 for the 19", up to $1500 for the 20".

Here's the problem with 'forged' multipiece wheels. Almost all of them only forge the center section(s). The rim section is typically spin-cast and machined, which makes it the weakest part of the wheel. Unfortunately, this is the part of the wheel that takes the most abuse, and is most likely to be damaged. So, what you're paying for in the BBS wheels isn't just weight, it's the forged rim section as well.
The rim, or outer ring on the Radenergie R10 is stamped "Forged in Japan" on the inside. I would hope that this meant the entire wheel is forged, especially the ring which is stamped. However, I would not be suprised if they were not, since I have two bent R10's being repaired. I noticed the the rim or ring on two were bent when I took them off for the winter.

I absolutely smashed my BBS RS-GT's into a curb head-on, so hard that my passenger hit her head on the dashboard (she was OK). No damage to the wheels whatsoever. I would recommend these particular wheels, or the BBS RGR's as the strongest forged wheels I know of. I have never heard a complaint about the strength of either wheel.

I have a fair amount of experience with forgeing, but I am by no means an expert in wheel forgeing. Forgeing is basically just taking a huge weight and smashing it against a piece of metal to form the metal into a shape. A forged piece will almost always be stronger than a cast piece because forging aligns the crystal structure, jams the molecules closer together, and eliminates 'holes' and improves the uniformity of the matal. It's like the difference between clamping a glued piece, or just letting it dry unclamped.

Nowadays, most forgeing is also done cold, as opposed to melting the steel and letting it cool as in casting. 'Cold working' a piece of steel will make it stronger. Try bending a paper clip one way, then the other. The place that you bent first has been 'cold worked', and will be difficult to bend the opposite way. So, when you smash a the rim of a wheel into shape when it's cold, it will be much more difficult to bend it back the other way. If you simply mold or cast it into this shape, it won't have any inherent resistance to being bent one way or the other.

Also very important is how hard you smash the metal. A wheel formed in a 15,000 ton press will be stronger than one formed in a 3,000 ton press, all other things being equal. The less expensive forged wheels use lighter presses.

Finally, and most importantly is the choice of material. A high quality wheel will use high quality stainless steel or aluminum that starts out with good grain structure, uniformity, and low porosity, and they'll use secondary processes such as heat treating to make it stronger after forgeing.

Anyways, lots of info, but if I'm spending that kind of money on wheels, I'd want to know a lot about how they are made, and what they are made of compared to the competition.

Im confident BBS should be a stronger wheel that most other so called forged wheels. I can tell you that Iforged isnt a true forged 3 piece wheel (still looks amazing though).
