wolverine,

Being a mesh-lover myself, I say go with that BBS in 20" if you like that mesh style (16-spokes).? Or if you really want to fill that wheel well, go for 21".

I know you've seen this before, but here it is again...boo-yah!

Yes, these are Hamann's Limited Edition mesh in 21-inch fitment for the e60 M5.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "mode".

yea as everyone as pretty much said, the oem rims for the M5 looks better. but it looks like you like mesh wheels so if it makes you happy then by all means go for those BBS rims. but of all the 3 rims in this thread the Hartge wheels are off the scale, absolutely so domineering, they have presence and give the car such an undeniable stance, anyone who sees em has to look @ them.

Hartge all the way but, those pics are of Hartge 21's. Thats why they look so incredible. I'm sure the 20's look good too but the crazy aggressive look you see there is 21's.

I like the Hartge wheels myself. But it sounds like you are hooked on the BBS mesh, which looks nice too. I don't think you have to worry about going with the 20s, especially with the M5. They would look much better IMO, and you shouldn't get a harsh ride, unless you modify your suspension to something stiffer.

I would also stick with the OEM rims. Given the BMW engineers spent so much time tweaking the M5 to maximize handling, I am worried that with aftermarket rims, you may lose some of the balance.

I was a bit worried about that as well. However, they also have to operate within cost constraints. The M5 rims are cast, and still fairly heavy at about 29 lbs apiece. The 20" BBS wheels are much stronger, and 22 lbs each. Plus the Michelin PS2 tires are now being used on the Ring Taxi, and are much higher rated than the Conti's on the Tirerack user survey. The BBS wheels are about $1000 more each than the OEM wheels, and the Michelin tires are $100 more each than the Conti's. No surprise they aren't original equipment on the M5.

I've decided to go with the above combo because I think it will give me better performance. Lighter wheel and tire combo's will cut about 30 lbs off the unsprung, rotating weight. Stiffer sidewalls may change the handling a bit, but probably for the better. You might be right about the balance though - I will probably use the OEM rims and Conti tires for my initial track setup. I'll report back on the difference.

I just can't warm up to the Hartges, in fact I wouldn't be caught dead in them. To me, they are way over the top. Plus they are quite heavy, over 35 lbs each, so they will certainly not improve the performance of the car. And the fake fasteners make them look cheap. Just goes to show you, lots of different takes on what makes a good looking wheel...
