So my friend and I took the M5 into the shop today. They checked the clutch because we asked them too (clutch over heated while moving slow up a steep hill due to an accident......like WTF!!! STUPID SMG!) and they told us that the entire clutch system and flywheel needs to be replaced. Total cost: $5,600 Canadian.... . Yes the car is under warranty but because this is a 'wear and tear' item, it is not covered. My friend, his dad and I sat and talked about the situation. We came to a conclusion of selling the M5, obviously making a profit from the original purchase, and buying a proper manual, Alpine White E92 M3 (friends favorite car).

Just wondering what you guys think of the decision.

I just had my clutch replaced under warranty at 35,000 miles. Thank god I was under warranty, my tech said it would've been roughly $6000USD

Good luck selling a car with worn clutch for a profit. You must live in dreamland if that were possible. I wold like to come live where you are.

I would prefer the E92 M3 to an M5 anyway, so looks like a win-win

Same here I've had the clutch and tranny replaced in the last 1000 miles 100% under warranty with no questions asked. How is the clutch a wear and tear item if you dont control it? If you are launching it constantly maybe but Id take it up with BMWNA before reaching into pocket. Btw a good independent should be able to do the clutch for around 3k. Nothing wrong with an M3 but I don't know why you'd want the inferior technology of the manual tranny. The DCT is the best part of the new M3's and sequential gearboxes are obviously the future, manuals just can't keep up. Ask anybody with an M or even a 911 turbo. The auto boxes crush the manuals everytime.

I wish that were true about my PDK! Worse gearbox ever! I hate it, it breaks down more than the SMG. And Porsche still haven't found a cure for it!

Symptoms: Clunky downshifts, slipping clutch on take off, soetimes the car won't take off at all, goes into nuetral and doesn't come out of it., irregular shifting ( can't decide which gear to go into )
