Looking to purchase a used 2008 M5.

Car #1) 59k Miles asking $44,000 From Private Seller, he's 2nd owner, he bought from Dealership so has CPO & Extended Service Package. Bone Stock.

Car #2) 40k Miles asking $46,500 From Private Seller, but the car has dealer plates and he has not registered it since he bought from auction. Says he part owner at a small dealership so he never registers his cars to avoid taxes, etc. Kinda a sketchy IMO. He's 2nd owner, he bought from Auction, Factory warranty until 9/12. MODS Eisenmann Performance Exhaust, Springs, 20" Wheels (He didn't list brand). Unknown history for the last year/10k miles.

Car #3) 29k Miles Asking $51,000 from dealership. Lease return. Has CPO. History of car looks great as all work was done at the same dealership. Stock.

Car #4) Keep looking for the combo of all 3 cars. $44k, low miles, nicely modded...

All 3 cars are nicely optioned #2 has HUD which the others do not. Not too concerned about it.

So, question, which one would you buy and why?

My first instinct was 2nd car based on mods. But, now leaning towards first one since it's the color combo and least expensive but also has the highest miles. I plan on keeping the car for as long as I can (current DD is 1999 E36 with 175k miles, original owner). The car is going to be my DD and I?m currently averaging about 7k miles/year. I understand M5?s are high maintenance cars and there?s cost associated with owning such a fine automobile. Probably around $1,000-$2,000/year for regular maintenance, correct me if I?m wrong.

I?ve heard that M5?s is not a car you want to own if it does not have a warranty. How many of you are planning on keeping the car after the warranty expires?

Thank you in advance.

I can't speak from experience, but at least from what I've collected from reading various forums: In terms of running expenses for the M5, maintenance costs will pale in terms of what you'll end up paying for gas, especially as a daily driver.

However, 7k miles a year is relatively low compared to what most people around me drive, so you may be fine with that.

I have a similar issue

A) 2008 M5 13K NO WARRANTY- $49,500

2008 M5 44K CPO - $ 47-48K

For A) i can purchase an extended warranty through my SA for $5k bringing the total to $55-56 including the cost to ship the car to NYC from TX.

I would avoid #2. I dont like the unregistered history aspect. I know small dealers like that and they DO have fun with some of their inventory. This doesnt stand for all but i'd be careful. For me, I stuck to one owner and lowest miles I could find within my price range, with full history. I also stayed away from modded cars. I like to do mod with my own choices, and a premodded car might have some fun under its belt. I guess I got lucky. Mine was owned by a 62 year old lady with 18k on it who traded it in for a panamera.

personally...I would only buy a CPOd car (stock), would get the maintenance program ($3500, or so), it would be a heavily optioned car with the miles total that didn't make me uncomfortable and would settle only on an exterior/interior combination that I like. I emphasize the fact that I wouldn't buy a "modded" car. And, even tho it would be CPOd, I still have a PPI done on it (from a respected mechanic outside the Dealership).
