so 98k plus ttl......damn. I dont think i have to pay sales tax cause i'm buying via pentagon sales (tax assessed when i get back to the states). Licence is only running 60 bucks for two years. dont know how much title is....we'll see. I'm about 90% sure I'll be getting the MY09 model - or another make...we'll see.

MSRP will be the same in every state across the US. This is a figure established by the manufacturer (BMW).
"Mark up" is a figure each specific dealership adds to the overall price for whatever reason they see fit. Not every dealership will do this. I personally will never pay for a vehicle that has a mark up price. I just don't need a car that bad.
One of the best places to start when negotiating price is to start from the invoice figure. You can use various sites to obtain this figure. I have always used edmunds.com but there are others.

Regarding dealerships in SoCal. The car is still very popular out here. In August you couldn't find any '07 M5's anymore. East coast dealers ran out first and began grabbing M5's from the west coast. You'll see nothing but '08 M5's on the lots now and dealers will continue to get more aggressive with price especially with the M3 on the way.

Good luck with your hunt.

yeah that's about right. Speaking with the Pen sales rep, If I dont put in a purchase order this winter I will have to wait until next fall. Stateside dealers will get most of the production first because vehicles have to be "on the lot" when they need them. Does not bother me much. I know I can get the car for 10-20k less than what I would from a stateside dealer. I'm riding the fence to see what Audi brings to the table and what the new 7er looks like. between now and then I will test drive the M5 and rent the rest of the "short list" to see what I want. If I wait till next fall to put the purchase order in, the time leaves me extra money to rent and drive (pimp) "like a rock star."
