Early reports from the E55 owners on the E63 are very dissapointing. The only performance advantage the E55 had over the M5 was the 'instantaneous torque', and the E63 is much worse than the E55 in that respect.

Isn't it interesting that MB is following BMW in trying to make their cars more responsive, higher revving, lower torque, and more acceleration at high speed? I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the M5 just eating the E55's lunch on the autobahn. The German MB owners are probably apoplectic about that...

Think back a couple of years and the early reports from many E39 owners on the E60 were somewhat similar if I recall... Always seems to be a "reason" why the newer and objectively better car isn't as good as the old one

Certainly there is the "I like my old car better" factor. You're probably right that this accounts for most of the comments. But if you look at the E39 complaints, they were pretty much right on. Lack of 'involvement' with the car due to lack of a manual tranny, and overuse of technology. Nobody argued the E60 was slower, or didn't handle as well.

The primary comments on the E63 center on the lack of low end torque, and the ugly spoiler. The E55 owners will have to get used to more of the E60 M5 type experience - high revving, lower torque engine with better steering and chassis.
