I think if you guys over the pond want load lugging ability you go for an SUV or 4x4.

Over here in blighty the 4x4 and SUV's just don't have anyway near the driving dynamics of a 5 Touring so for people like me it fills a crucial gap as the handling differences between the Touring and the Saloon (sedan) are negligible (believe me, I've driven both for whole weekends). Also they are seen to have a bit of kudos, especially with the M Sport kit.

Believe you me, if they did an M5 Touring in the UK I would be the first in line (they don't so I keep hold of the Porker - shame )
This is why I own a Nissan Armada in the US and an Alpina B5 Touring in the UK...

JLS, have you considered the B5 as an alternative?

Interesting. I wonder whats the reason. I have a friend that works at BMW dealership and they having a really hard time selling touring models. I think he said they sold 4 cars in 6 months. Maybe its just Texas.
Probably - if everyone thinks like you:
"I know I would NEVER buy an M5 Touring - why spend that kind of money - on a WAGON! I don't get it."
Wagons are extremely popular here - you can get them with six speed transmision, you can get them all souped up, M-kit them, sports-package them, or any of the other brands - like Audi and Mercedes and they're not as big as an SUV, but allow you to haul a load in style. I once had a Ford Taurus Wagon and it was awesome. One of the best cars I've had. Only thing I wasn't happy with is I could not get it stick because "men do not buy wagons and women do not drive stick"

US thinking is "wagons are lame, soccer mom stuff". But big-ass SUVs are OK? You should see the screamers I see on the autobahns here. There's nothing prettier than an E61 with and M-Kit hung on it. We had a couple in our trip in July.

Regards.

I actually rather like it - it's a bit simple, sure, but it's not roly-poly like a Sequoia, doesn't fall apart as quickly as an Expedition/Navigator, is much bigger than a Durango, is cheaper than a Landcruiser, and much better all round than the GM SUVs available at the time (early 2005).

We just did an 1800 mile trip in it - 2 adults, 2 kids, 5 suitcases and loads of other stuff - worked great!

No thanks - over there, I need a load lugger - a Cayenne's far to small!

Someone once asked me why I didn't get a Cayenne Turbo instead of my Alpina - let's think - the Alpina is faster, handles better, is more spacious, has better fuel economy, is more exclusive and less expensive... Why on earth do people buy the things?

I think an M5 wagon would be a great ride to have here in the U.S., but I would be surprised if sales were strong for such a model in this market. Although it is a market that may be growing in the footsteps of Europe. Having a Volvo XC70 (as well as 530xi sedan) I would seriously consider an M5 wagon down the road.

I totally agree with those who would have bought a 545/550 Touring in the US, IF they offered it -- which they don't.

If I could convince myself to spend the money on an M5, I would like a Touring. But I doubt I'll convince myself, and I doubt they'll sell them in the U.S.

I love the idea of an M5 Touring. I can just see the look on the face of the little 911 who gets beat at a light by a station wagon!

What's the market for a n M5 Touring? I know it is almost non-existent in US. I know I would NEVER buy an M5 Touring - why spend that kind of money - on a WAGON! I don't get it.
That's just it...who wants a big station wagon with a 6 when you can get an SUV with much more power. Exactly why BMW needs to enter the US with any kind of V8 touring vehicle...they need to satisfy people like me with 4 kids and a wife!

SUV (pick up truck in disguise) as daily transport. Been there, done that for many years. No thanks. Give me a high powered wagon any day.
