my530i:

Interesting thought!

Maybe the new M5?s resale value will drop even quicker due to this high rpm philosophy?

This is not a high revving engine, it is an engine that CAN rev high. You must also consider the extra two cylinders take some wear away from normal use. The biggest problem with high revving engines (motorcycles, race cars set up for 1/4 mi.) is valve bounce, and it's relation to camshaft wear (BMW has put in an extremely stiff one) and lifter separation, the amount of pressure put on lifter springs is usually innapropriate in porportion to high compression (ie. they don't make em' good enough to handle the load) VANOS and the use of hydraulics will take care of most of that problem.

There are three ways to significantly increase HP

1) Install a blower, would the E60 look good with a blower stack sticking 8" out the hood?

2) Turbo, BMW seems to shy away from this idea (also worse wear and tear on the motor)

3) Raise the RPM ceiling which increases HP across the entire power curve (smooth power)

To top this off slap a 7 speed in this puppy to handle the load and you got yourself a four door race car
