The problem is that the electronic gauge doesn't cycle through a new reading unless you're driving a pretty good distance at a relatively constant speed. I remember reading about this somewhere as well but not sure if it was in the owner's manual or some Tech section of Roundel or Bimmer magazine. I can go for weeks in short distance driving locally and my oil level doesn't change at all and I'll jump on a ~50 mile drive from San Jose to SF and it can drop several tenths. Just carry a quart/liter of oil in your trunk at all times.

If you hold the button that cycles through the temp, mileage, etc. while it is on the oil indicator it will reset the oil level. I believe the car needs to be warmed up and on a flat surface and stopped for it to take a reading.

My car will give me an oil level reading while moving.

Same here the dealer will usually do it for free if you stop in.
Up until a few months ago.. both local dealers by me in north Jersey would charge me for oil no matter what... they said it was absolutely not complimentary... thankfully though one of them has starting doing it
on the house...

Went in for my first complimentary oil top up on the M5 yesterday since owning the car (5 months).

Interesting to note that the dealer uses a different oil for the M cars: Castrol TWS Motorsport. I assume being a dealer, that this is a directive from BMW?

So even my previous 545 was getting the "normal" dealer oil

Cheers
