I was looking at potential purchase of an 2006 M5 the and the owner mentioned that he has to top up the oil in between oil changes apparently due to the V10 engine using so much oil. Wondering if this is normal oil comsumption in a M5? What is normal? Any of you experience this? My 545i V8 doesn't need to be topped up in between.

Yes it is normal for an M engine to burn a bit of oil. This V10 is no exception and I find that I need to add one quart every 3,000 miles. No big deal.

The BMW V8 engine will also consume oil if you push it hard. Mine consumed almost 3 quarts of oil in the first 12K miles. I went to a lot of driving meets and did a lot of twisties in second and third gear with the engine revving near the redline for long periods of time. My guess is that the M5 owner pushes his car hard as well.

I have an 06 and if you push your car it will burn the oil faster, but I use it as a daily driver and put in about 1 quart every 2,500 miles.

Same here the dealer will usually do it for free if you stop in.

BTW, what's the normal oil level indicator? Mine is smack in the middle between lowest arrow and highest arrow... does this mean I need to top it up?

No need to top it off until the oil indicator shows it a the lowest arrow. Check the oil level in iDrive and it will tell you to add a quart (liter) when it needs it. I think there is something like 10 quarts of oil in the engine, and the scale of the oil indicator shows the measurment between 9 and 10 quarts ... so there is plenty of oil still left in there.

Here is what the Owner Manual says ...

Do not add oil until a value slightly above the
Minimum of 0.0 quarts/liters is displayed by the
oil level measurement. In this area a message is
also shown on the Control Display.
Add oil within the next 125 miles/200 km,
otherwise the engine could be damaged.
Add a maximum of 1 US quart/1 liter of oil, otherwise
the engine may be damaged by adding
too much oil.
