Unless you've driven an E60 M5 (or M6), you will never quite understand the size of the actual gap that exists between the 535i (or even the 550i) and the M5 in terms of all aspects of performance. It's like day and night, and I have driven quite a few E60 5's and an M6.
totally agree...I used to think how good could 550i be over my 540i, then I bought the 550i and thought "WOW!!! this car just kills the 540i"...then I thought the M5 can't be "that much better" than my 550i. Then I bought the M5 and thought "SH*T...why did I wait so long before buying the M5!!!???"

...only time I miss the 550i is when I'm in a traffic jam...then I look at my suede lining, M-stiching, SMG paddles...and I just smile and forget I ever owned the 550i

535i + Chip Tuning and Bolt On's is not even going to bring the HP range to M5 territory. But for practicality (gas/insurance/etc) 535i takes the cake. Who cares about practicality anyways? After I finish modding my 550i i will get a M5, not even going to consider power upgrades for 550

Speaking of 535's. Today, I dropped off my M5 for its 1200 miles service and was surprised to get 535xi as a loaner. I was able to put over 50 miles on it.

Nice as it was, I don't think I'll be swapping my M5 for the 535!

It's funny what you get used to and then miss once you don't have it. The tightness and solid feel of the M5 is lost in the 535xi, obviously...with no sport suspension and 17" rims. I was also missing 4 cylinders and 200HP, which I'd like back! cool.gif However, I found the 535 to be quicker than I had expected...very zippy! It was also nice to drive a straight auto for a day. As for the electronic shifter...I don't like the flimsy, "pseudo" feel, however the LCI tranny is twice as fast as the Steptronic...which I did like. So, you lose the solid feel of the step, but gain the faster gear shifts. Personally, I'd have to spend the $500 on the sport paddles to like this arrangement.

Next stop.....pick up the M5 Friday, post 1200 mile break-in! I'll be removing the charcoal filters ASAP and installing BMC filters, then RPI scoops. I can't wait to unleash "The Beast" tomorrow! evil.gif

I'm not sure I like those orange side reflectors sticking out next to the front wheels. 1200 miles already? I bet you can't wait to get "The Beast" back?

Well, it has been 6 weeks after all. I am not sure I deserve an "1200 miles already?" for that.
