For sure it'll be some delay from crankshaft sensor all the way to HUD. Crankshaft sensor sends signal to the processor, and signal will be processed by the software using the processor. Signal is then sent to the display processor and project the image onto the windshield. This takes some time, and I don't know if BMW already find a solution for this. BMW does not want to be shamed showing the HU tach lagging 1.5Krpm to the press.

Tach delays are nothing new to BMW...
On my E39 6-speed, in first gear the tach was always behind under hard acceleraton. The rev limiter always kicked in before redline. My dealer told me it was because the tach couldn't keep up with the engine but the limiter worked off the drivetrain somewhere so it kicked in at the appropriate time -- even though the tach wasn't indicating redline at the time.
