Actually there no longer is any logic. It started out as the number of their internal design projects. The 356 actually was design project 356, but it gets foggy from there. The first generation boxster was a 986 (current generation is 987), but was released a few years before the last generation Carrera (996; current generation is 997). The Cayenne is 955, Carrera GT is 980.

A bit of trivia: the first 911 was originally designated the 901 (it really was the 901st design project), but shortly before Porsche was set to introduce it at the 1963 Frankfurt auto show, Peugeot threatened to sue (they had rights to every 3 digit car designation with 0 as the second digit), so at the last minute the 901 became the 911.

Very interesting... So to actually be up to date with (all) their model denominations you have to be an enthusiast at least.

Well! I'm almost sure that most people in this forum would not complain to own both! If only resources were unlimited... But then they wouldn't bother building them :'(

Thats the phrase everyone's been waiting for.

If I could afford 2, then it'd be my 545 plus an M6. Just can't stand the noise from the Porsche.

Yep--the same with BMW, right? E60 is current 5 series, E39 prior!

Thanks for the comparison. I agree, it must be akward to just drive a porsche on a daily basis. The torture to the car would be great. But in any case from what i hear, Porsche's are the easiest exotics to drive on a day to day basis.

Do you drive the 545 in winter then? If so, how would you describe the handling?

I use four 18-inch Dunlop Winter Sports on the OEM rims and the car got thru everything - I was amazed!! It's my fourth 5er, and it's by far the best in winter weather.

Well in that sense yes! But we still have some guidance at least, e.g. 5-45

Both are excellent cars to own. But the short answer is 997TT.

I had cancelled my M5 order and bought a 530xi for daily use. Currently on waitlist for a 997TT. There is really no logic way to choose between the E60M5 and 997TT, but it is always the 997TT that I think about owning when I close my eyes.

These two cars are so different that its really not fair to compare the two. The 911 is a faster car with better handling but the M5 is a practical 4 door sedan with plently of power.

Hi all,

If you would have the option of choosing between an E60 M5 and the upcoming next generation 911tt, which of the two would you choose and why?

O boy, mpower99; been through this, and in the end, im opting for the m6. Test drove the new Careera S convertible on the other day and was BLOWN away by its performance. But after deep consideration, i chose to stick with buying the M6. Why ? Well, M6 has more room, more HP, is faster, could be a daily driver and still be a track car ( M BUTTON!!!) excellent performance guaranteed. Also ill have a piece of mind knowing the fact that on the road, itll beat everysingle car out there, including the Careera S. Also on top of that, the M6 is cheaper than a careera S. M6 is here will be less than $130 gz CDN, while the porsche will be over $133gz for the convertible. But Porsche is just such a fun car, and like other people mentioned, if i had the budget, would buy both! Insurance is killer here in canada.
