2006 M5 without extended warranty or a trustworthy shop around your area is a BIG no-no. There's a reason why there's a HUGE price jump for the years. I JUST turned 28 (feel old now ) and since I was 23, I pay the same price insurance. My premium surprisingly didnt drop when I turned 25. Currently full coverage with $500 deductible for 3 cars (2008 M5, 2002 SLK32 AMG, 2005 Sequoia) is $1500 for 6 months. I use geico.

If you were really to get the car, I would have a shop run a full diag on the car. Check the life of the clutch, how much pressure the SMG pump is doing, check the electronic connections inside the trunk for corrosion, check the control arms, brakes, check for any LOUD ticking noises in the engine bay (small small ticking is fine), and all major things I might have forgotten. I am not sure if BMW knows how to check the clutch and SMG pump as there are NO instructions from BVMW themselves for that but we can read what is going on from looking at the numbers from the GT1. If you don't want to buy extended warranty, set aside $3000 to prepare for it. Remember you are just preparing.

Set aside Insurance, maintenance both preventive and current maintenance, set aside labor and for parts if something breaks, gas will be alot higher than your 525i but we'll worth the price of gas compared to the enjoyment you'll get driving one

Wow you guys pay 400 a month! That's crazy I'm 22 with full coverage I mean everything and it's 107 per month for my 2006 m5. And it's going to go down even more when I take the online defensive driver course. And that's my own policy thru geico not on my parents.

Well..

I have an 06 M5 without aftermarket warranty and have had no issues whatsoever (knockonwood)..

M5 is a beast, but doesnt come without expense. I pay $235.00/month, but have a TON of insurance through my corporate structure. I get a deal (25yrs old).
Gas... well dont expect to get any good mileage, i get 11.4L/100 on the highway gear 7, @ 130km/h...

Your average tank 65L (18 Gallons) will get you 250km (150mi)...

Its a pgig on fuel especially with mods and a heavy foot.

DOnt expect to have little expenses on the car, its an expensive car to own.

YES... FAST AS SHIT!!

From what I've read here, M5 would be too ambitious for a young driver. It's a V10 gas quencher, I know there's a 400/500 HP switch, so it's V10 or V8 humming, thirsty, gas craving beast with no warranty and high insurance premium.

I personally think a tuned 535i is the best of both worlds. A spirited sprinter when you want to run and a V6 cruiser when you want to chill. My mods are getting near 400 HP at the crank and it's still bare the weight of a V6 engine. Yes, I have 20 yrs on you and I pay 1600/yr AAA ins for fully comp for 2 cars for wife and I. Car's still under factory warranty so zero repair costs and all the extra bucks can go into modding fun, possibly building on 400+ HP.

Wow, what was I doing wrong at 23! At 23, I was driving an 1991 Honda Accord. Now at 29, I'm finally able to drive something nice, certainly not an M5 though. I would say forecast your finances well, to make sure that owing such a beast would not be an financial burden to you.

If you can get the M5 at your current age and afford it, I say go for it. Many times when you get older, and then a family comes along your super car dreams get put on hold.

I'm still debating about it, if I get one it would be a 08+. Paying for the car isn't a problem, but 18 gallons for 150 miles?! wtf... That is ridiculous. Maybe I'm better off with a 535 with a cobb ap tune for around 400hp, it gets way better gas. I'm sure filling up constantly would get real old seeing as how this would be my DD
