...I have a buyer for my 2004 m5 replicia, (33,000miles that gets 27mpg city and 34highway with 100,000 mile extended warranty), I am looking at purchasing a 2006 preowned 10mpg but with lots of 500 horsepower, and extras... yes I got the real m5 fever, and before I take M5 plunge, I first noticed a lot of 2006 e60 m5s on the market that are in excellant condition, for $42,000.00 or under $40,000.00 with 46000 miles or less, and just wondered if there was a problem with that particular year (2006) with the SMG Transmissions, etc M5s or not that was corrected in the 2007, 08, 09s M5?

Thanks in advance e60, 5 series forum!!

$42K for an 06? Spend about $8K more and get an 08. There's currently a black one with full dinan mods for buy it now on ebay for $50K I think. early build 06 have SMG problems.

The only issue unique to the 2006 M5 model year is the vanos pump and oil line - which should have been replaced at this point under warranty. Check any '06 M5 you are looking at for this replacement.

Also, the infanous Red Cog Of Death (some sort of limp-home transmission failure) does seem to happen more to early-build '06 owners. So looking for a late 2006 model year build (March 2006 - August 2006), or even a 2007 model year, may easy your mind. An extended warranty also is a really good idea.

Mine is a Dec 2005 build and had the vanos pump and oil line replaced at 36 months / 12,500 miles. It has been flawless since then.

Otherwise, I don't think you will regret getting an M5 ... they are astonishing to drive.

I am looking a couple and obiviously i can get a better deal on an older one. The one at the top of my list right now is a 10/2005 build with 40k miles. If I get the vin number is there a way to go to a BMW dealer and get the car's service history printed out? And if the Vanos pump and the tranny/clutch have been worked should i be good for the major repairs?

Is the Vanos pump hard to replace on the V10s? I replaced it on my Z4 and it took me half a day but it wasn't all too hard.

Try to get at least early 2007 build or very late 2006. Warranty DOES NOT cover everything especially w&t. Clutch assembly, fly wheel, and some other parts in transmission are not covered by warranty. Usually they say it happens when the car went through 50-60 thousand km, but in my friends case, he has only 24k km and it failed on him on a highway, it switched gears 5th-2nd pretty sad inst it. My experiencing it was going back on Neutral from any gear, and I would have to shut down the car and turn it back on, couple times, until it went to reverse and u need a tow truck for that

Good luck buddy

But hey, not to get u fully disappointed, M5 is a hell of a machine ! Just fine a 07 at least to make your self least worried, or check with local dealer the car history and maintenance maybe it has been already fixed.

...Thanks M5 owners for your valuable answers to my questions about the 2006 M5s, and I am also looking at a "red" 2008, M5 with 40,000miles for $59,000.00, but the 2006 M5 is at a far better price: $42,000,00.

$59k with 40K miles for an 08 seem sa bit high. I got mine for $51K but it's fully loaded. Had to bargain a little. There's a black on black with FULL dinan mods for only $50K right now on ebay. 2008 model!
