Hello.
What?s the deal with the idle sound of the m5? If i?m right, after seeing the reviews on 5th gear and topgear, it sounds little like a diesel engine. How come? I mean mechanicly; the build of the engine... what is it that makes the engine sounds like that?
Thanks.

it only sounds a bit like a diesel when it's running stationary. When it's driving it sounds like it's chased by the devil!

It is the way that the lifters sounds on that car, sounds funny, but that is the way it is.
Hmm... ok. They should?ve made something about it in the first place i think. I mean, when i hear a diesel-engine or a engine that sounds like it, i immedietly(spell?) thinks of a tractor or something. Not god.
I really don?t know what they were thinking. There most?ve been som advantage to take from allt this, otherwise i just can?t understand why they would do something like it

The valve tapping noise sounds like diesel engine. That was the reason I traded my Lexus RX330 (Toyota Harrier 330) for this 530i. It's very annoying parking at redlight at night or while idling. I've heard most of direct injection engine also cause "diesel music", too, due to fuel injector's high pressure.

Ok, i?ve heard that it?s because the "Vanos" that (some?) BMW engines sounds like a diesel. Vanos: http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/vanos.htm
Discussion about it: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthrea...ht=diesel+sound
As someone in that thread: "It is kind of embassasing to start a 400 hp V8 and it sounds like a taxi..."

When my car was new it sounded like a diesel in the beginning but it doesn't do that any more. It could be the same with the M5
