I am getting a little concerned about oil consumption. I did not recall such erratic behavior when my E39 M5 was being broken in.

When i picked up the car in oregon on day one. I consumerd 0.3L of engine oil within 1st 100 miles. After that there was no consumption of oil until 900+ miles (i can't remember exactly the mileage, but it was some where between 930 and 940).

Since friday, i have logged another 200 miles on it (at this time it has about 1160 miles on it and schedule for service tomrrow at BMW fremont). However, i have consumed 0.5L within last 200 miles.

Not sure if this is normal. But from what i have seen on other people's car so far. My oil consumption has been on the low end side. But losing 0.5L within 200 miles really has me worried.

 

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most M engines are quite finicky and erratic when "young".

My E46 M3 consumed no oil during the first 1200 miles. On the other hand my buddy's E39 M5 drank oil like a thirsty fish, from day one until he sold it 3 years later (always joked with him that he shouldn't ever have to change the oil cuz it was burning it all up anyway ... )

 

Yeah, it seems the oil consumption is all over the map. Different cars get wildly different readings. The engine definitely does use oil though.

 

Yes, my engine wanted quite a lot of oil under the break in period. Have now stabilized at 0.1L - 0.2 L/1000km.

The oil measuring system is not the fastest system on earth!!! Needs some improvement I think.

my car is still at dealer. I have no idea that it would take this long.

When i called to make the appointment i was told by SA that it would be 2 hour job.

Well, he is wrong. Dropped the car off at 8:30. When i left at 12:20 it is still being worked on. (the 1200 mile service was done at 12:20 when i left, but they are working on the vibration issue).

 

What vibration issue???

 

When i took delivery of the car in oregon, the delivery dealer told me that they noticed minor vibration from the front. But since I was coming, they didn't have time to fix it. They noted the problem on the paper work.

The vibration is noticeable when i hit fwy speed or higher, and actually quiet bad on smooth surface.

The delivery dealer told me that they believe it is tire/wheel issues.

So i took the car in to fremont today for the 1200 miles service. I was told that the problem is not with the wheels/tires. My right front control arm is damaged (from poor assembly) and has to be replaced. After that, they need to rebalance the tire/wheel (apparently the delivery dealer tried to solve the problem by adding weight to thr wheel, and that did not solve the problem), and alignment.

The car is still safe to drive. But i think i will have to wait for a while until parts comes in and go from there.

Bad thing is that i am leaving the country for 3 months in about a week and half. So i probably will not have enough time to get the car out to the track.
