Since pricing is similar, should I buy a 2006 M5 or a 997 Porsche 911 S/Cab? Why or why not? Pro/con?

They are 2 entirely different cars. You should decide what you want in a car, and the answer will become evident.

Agree. Here's a couple questions to ask yourself:

1. How much highway driving do you do, especially long trips?
2. How often do you transport more than 1 other person?

If you have a need to transport more than one person fairly frequently, or if you do a fair amount of hwy driving, I would get the M5. If you don't spend much time on the hwy, and don't need to carry more than one other person, I'd get the Porsche.

I had two M3s, and four 5 (525, 530, 540, 545) and a 996 911. How much different is the E60 M5 from the 545? Is it a true sports car or a supped-up sporty sedan? If it is a true sports car, then it should not be that different from a 911? Yes?

I went through a similar decision before deciding on the M5.

While I think the 911S is a fantastic car, it's a bit rough around the edges for a daily driver, which is what I was looking for. The 911S is a bit cramped inside, and really cannot carry much of anything (e.g. business brief cases, luggage for short trips, etc.).

Also, getting in and out of a Porsche is much more of a hassle than in the M5. While I might not mind, my passengers (who sometimes are guests or clients) sure would.

Still, if you can live with those "compromises" go for the 911. It's pure adrenaline rush that the M5 just can't deliver.

The M5 is a compromise, no doubt, but a good compromise (at least for me).

Good luck.

well TBH i looked at both and test drove both... in the end both turned out to be too expensive for the time being (very high interest repayments), but the m5 would smoke the c4 cab's ass

anyways if it were up to me id choose A Carrera S Aerocup edition and spec it really nicely, it looks so amazing you JUST have to see it. But well specced it comes to 134000euro whereas the m5 works around 107000euro, so big difference... Cabrio is even more

The M5 is not a sports car. It's probably the best sports sedan on the market right now, but not a sports car. The Carrera, with it's lower center of gravity and weight, and superior steering, handling and brakes, is a sports car--one of the best, and one of the few you can have as a daily driver (I drove one of mine for years as a daily driver). Take both cars on some twisties and you'll feel the difference.
