Hi All,
As a mere mortal with a humble E60 530D oil burner, I come to your high-tech, v10, 507BHP petrol filled realm to ask you a question.
Do Audi drivers really try and race / keep up with you. Ok, perhaps a slight generalization on Audi drivers but I when I do see an M5 on the motorways I always seem to see something like a 4 pot 2.0 Audi / Ford / Vauxhall try keeping up
. I can understand if they want to hear that awesome engine and exhaust note, but it just seems that their mannerism is reminiscent of the green eyed monster. Or do they actually think they have a chance to over take you?
I have been in a similar position fairly recently where 'idiot' drivers in 4 pot cars seemed to try and provoke me into making a mistake on the road. The car I was driving was the fairly new X6M after my local stealership organized a weeks extended test drive with BMW UK (Braknell) for me. Not many people realised it was a proper 'M' car. Despite the tell-tell signs such as no fog lamps in the front bumper, the side vents, the quad exhausts and not forgetting the interior, paddles and white instrument dial. And of course the noise of the mammoth 555BHP from the V8 4.4 twin turbo.
If I do order one of these beasts will the unwanted attention be an everyday occurrence? Alternatively, I may hold out for the F10 M5 which will have a tweaked version of this engine.

Funny thing is.. I get more stupid G35 Coupes and Mustangs trying to race me then any other cars...
I have a good system, because i really do not like speeding in an uncontrolled environment, and (knock on wood) have not had a single ticket in my beast in just under 2 years;
First off i've learned that nothing in the law sais you can't speed UP TO the speed limit, as long as you stay in control, and not squeeling your tires all over the place (which would be grounds for "reckless driving" or "distrubing the peace"), and as long as you dont maintain that acceleration beyond the speed limit. So my take is, dust them off the line, up to 70-80km/h, then coast....
Funny thing is, this happened to me last night after a little bonding (clean session) with my Beast. Rolled up to a red light on a rural 80km/h road and a Mustang GT pulled beside me.. Reved his engine (which makes me laugh) and i figured.. ok i'll embarrase you, and give you something to talk about with your friends for weeks to come... I turned traction off, beared down and dusted him to 80.. he must have been 3-4 car lengths back (yes by my shift to 2nd gear) and then let off and coasted around 90km/h.... He flew by showing off his BIG AMERICAN MUSCLE.. and i just laughed...
I seldomly will do something like this because its the same thing everytime, but i will say i would love for this to happen with a 911 turbo or a AM DB9 or something.. would be nice to show that my 4 door "family sedan" can keep up with the big boys!
Cheers, and safe driving...

I have only had an E63 and a CLS63 honk to try. The others pull up, take a good look, then pull back.
It's fun opening her up every so often but usually drive safely ... spirited... but safely.

In reality this car with manbeast about 98% of the cars out there. Racing is dangerous and stupid, and i learned that the hard way when i was younger.
If you want to race, and speed, do it on the drag...
Its funny how many people pull beside, give the thumbs up and cruise off.. THEY LOVE THIS CAR!

There was a 2011 S4 that was riding my back on a windy street in Orange County,
I got in the right lane to let him pass and he starts honking.
I figured it was some kid and should probably be put in his place if he wanted to run. (in retrospect I probably shouldn't have raced)
So I proceeded to M mode, down shift and took off.
I don't care that he had quattro, my M5 still out handled the S4 and pulled. We get to the stop light and naturally its some 17 y/o kid with a friend (can't really talk I'm 20 in a few days)
To answer your question:
Yes, they do try, and fail miserably.
Don't even want to tell you the story of my "R8 twin turbo" encounter, that was laughable..
