I don't know it's quicker than an S. Both M5 and Carerra S are about the same on 0-60, and not that it matters here in the US but the 997S isn't speed limited. I agree the M5 is quicker than the regular Carrera. I love the M5, it's a phenomenal car. For me, though, I prefer the 997 looks and I also think the Porsche handles better.
ok what about a gt3???? =) gt3 vs m5

That said, you have to consider practicality. The 997, whether in S or GT3 guise, is an out and out sports car and it's built to do that well, but it lacks space. I can seat four, but only with the children in the back. I use mine as a daily driver, but I also have an SUV in case I need more space. The M5 asks you to make fewer compromises, it's an awesome sports sedan, and it's as practical as any E60. For me, I think that overall the 997 is the better sports car but the M5 is also top of its class. They are different cars in different classes so it's not really a straightforward comparison.

No contest. GT3 - but you to remember that the GT3 costs quite a bit more than the M5, and you'll struggle to get one at MSRP, or even close to MSRP.

i definatly agree that the space issue is big differnce its hard to get busy with a girl in a porsche i never had any problems with all my bmws hehe .... the gt3 has no A/C that sucks !! i guess the M5 is the best of all worlds .... no should i wait for the 09 model ????

Oh he did say S... the S was so small I missed it. Is the Shift key broke on the keyboard?
