I have both now. The 550 get twice the gas milage of the M5. and it is just as fast unless you really step on the M5. But I just love the SMG gearbox and like they say, once you try the M5 you will be hooked and that's exectly what happened to me taking my 550 for a service and test drove a M5.

Two totally different cars. Drive them both before you decide. 550 is way more refined and is fast enough for most, but the M5 is an all out rampaging beast. It's ferocious and I have a hard time driving anything else but it definitely isn't for everyone. For me I'd say get the M and a good 3rd party warranty and you'll never stop smiling. This is the first car that I've had for over a year that I look at every day and don't want to switch out for something new. I go through cars fast and this one is pure bliss.

This is the letter-perfect description of the car.

I'm into my second - and, unfortunately, last - one.
I've been saying for almost six years that BMW will never produce another model that looks like the E60. And will never sell another 5 series that has a V10. And certainly not the SMG.

Each to his/her own tastes, as it's all personal. But the model is uniquely identifiable effort in almost every way - in the auto world as well as BMW history.

HP sells cars. TQ wins races! The 550i is pretty torquey as it is. MPG wise, it's the same IMO. I get about 12 MPG in my 545i. So 2 MPG less doesnt really mean anything. If ur getting it as a daily driver, I would get the 550i. As a fun car, get the M5.

I plan on buying the E60 M5 as a keeper. Like hlmiii said, BMW will most likely NOT make another V10 and in SMG. These two combo is the FUN FACTOR! There's not as much fun as DCT. We're driving for pleasure not outright speed and acceleration. How often we track these cars anyway?

hlmiii, u have the car exactly how i want!!!!!

brabus -

Next time you're in Houston put yourself in my driver's seat ...

I did get better mileage in my 545. You're clearly having more fun!
The only difference I'd suggest is that the M5 can be enjoyed as a daily driver. It's just as usable as its other E60 little brothers, and it's far more enjoyable in town than the E9x M3.

"We're driving for pleasure"
Exactly. No matter what the situation.

Absolutely not true at all...An F1 car has virtually no torque, yet will smoke anything in its path thanks to its 800+hp

The 550 would make a better daily driver.
