I am looking into purchasing a 5-Series this month and can't decide between the 550i and M5. I am ok with spending the money on the M5 but I am afraid that a M5 out of warranty will cost me a fortune on upkeep. Is this a good deal for an 06' 550i - http://www.globalautosports.com/car/...dan-30328.html

How much are you looking to spend on an M5? Cause I know there is no way you can get a decent M5 anywhere near the price of that 550i

As for out of warranty issues, yes you WILL have them and yes they WILL be expensive. You can buy an extended warranty or not depending on how often you plan on driving the car. Just make sure that you don't test drive the M5 until after you've already made your decision

Both 550 and M5 will be a fortune to repair if it breaks...

I would get the M5, BUT if MPG is a issue get the 550i.

What BMWPower06 said. Don't test drive it until you've decided.

+1000 If you're worried about "out-of-warranty" issues, get a 3rd party extended warranty and get the M5. Gas mileage will be much less, but your enjoyment level will go through the roof.

Don't get the M5. It's too fast, you get too many looks. Also, after owning one, you will no longer want to drive any vehicle with less than 500hp.

It really depends what you want as they are really two different cars. Depends on your driving style/commute/etc. No question the M5 will have higher operating costs, but mitigate the cost by making sure you get a low mileage car. It's worth taking your time to find the right car and paying a bit more to get a low mileage, clean car. In addition to higher operating costs, the M will cost more than a 550i to purchase for the same year/mileage so decide on your budget and stick to it. You are better off with a low mileage 550 than a high mileage M for the same cost. If you can swing a low mileage M then for sure do it, but you need to think around $50k.

As a previous poster noted: be warned - once you drive an M5, it is difficult to go back....

Both cost plenty of dough to fix outside of warranty which I why I would never own one outside of warranty. But if you can afford either car, why wouldn't you get the Beast. 550 is a terrific car. But it is no M5.
