E60 forums,

I only just found out that you can send locations etc direct from Google maps to the car under BMW assist. Anyone else know of other funky things about the car they wish to share? I'm not a owners manual geek so you can point out anything. I won't complain!

That feature is great but only applies to later production date e60s with ASSIST.

How do you do that?

Search a location using Google Maps and identify and it select "send" and this window opens up. The rest is self explanatory if you are moderately computer literate. If not, search instructions in Google and it'll walk you thru it.

However, only newer BMW's (production date I think after September 2006) with an active ASSIST account can currently use this feature.

Can you confirm what cars have this capability and which don't? I have a 04/06 build and would love to use this.

This feature will only work in the the 2009 US models. You also have to pay for a BMW assist account. It is then only accessible through a new feature that appears in the iDrive menu called My Info, From that tab, you can download the Google Map location you sent to your car and set it as a navigation destination.

I would imagine this requires a new piece of communication hardware, otherwise, they would be able to add this to other model years via a software update.

What I am wondering is if this feature could be added via some sort of hardware retrofit. I think it would be worthwhile since attempting to enter addresses via the iDrive now really sucks and takes forever. It may require replacing the whole CCC module, which can get quite expensive. If that is the case, you might as well wait and see if you can wait to replace the whole iDrive unit to upgrade to the new version that is rumoured to show up in March builds of the 2009 e60's.

Now that is a retrofit I would definitly attempt. It would be very pricey, but very worth it IMO.
