Thumbs up

Hello All,

Just changed from my 545i to M5. Absolutely awesome!!

My only gripe is the more frequent fuel stops at the petrol station. With the style and distance I did in my 545, I could get 2 weeks between refills. Now its every 5-6 days.

Granted, you own an M5, the trade off is fuel economy (or lack of), so I accept that. But why didn't BMW put a bigger tank in it to compensate for the range?

The owners manual says it has a 70 litre fuel tank, but with the needle sitting on empty, the best I can fill in is 63 litres. Where's the other 7 litres?

Sounds crazy but does anyone know anything about (if it even exists) either a larger fuel tank or an auxilary fuel tank?

Thanks!

Yes I have the same issue. When I fill up my tank it's about 15 gallons when the needle is almost on empty...
I guess they made it conservative becuase of how fast this beast drinks fuel...

There has been nothing that I found to have a auxilary fuel tank or anything larger...
With conservative driving I get around 200 miles before a fill up that opn mostly city and some highway and 135 miles if I drive aggresive.

The other 7 litres are what's left in the tank that got you to the filling station!

There's actually a reserve that is not calculated on the computer. So you will basically never run out of gas... Everyone thinks that you have to fill up before you hit 0 miles otherwise your empty. But in true fact you still have a little over a gallon left in your tank.

Typically when my reserve comes on with 60 miles to go I normally can get around 60 - 64 litres in tank depending how quick I get to the pump

Thanks for that guys,

I've never been game enough to run the tank down past what the computer says. Also that ever annoying "Ding" everytime u start up warning you of limited range.

But I'll give it a try if it means avoiding the petrol station for another day or so!

The bit of research that I've done shows a bigger main fuel tank is not practical.

However, a small 10 to 15 litre (2.6 - 3.9 gallon) auxilary tank between the filler neck and the main tank, with fuel level sender connect to a small digital readout in the corner of the dashboard (totally independent of the car's systems) may work. The main tank will be constantly full until this auxilary tank runs out and the computer's range calculations will be meaningless until the fuel in the main tank starts getting used.

Obviously above idea must be installed by a professional specializing in fuel tanks installations (ie for 4x4 and offroaders etc). Anyway just an idea for the time being.

Cheers
