Alpina buys the car from BMW, then they modify the engine,shift etc.then sent back to BMW and they construct the car.
B5 is deff, smoother, it has a reprogrammed Steptronic shifter, and not the SMG aka M5

My Ride: 535d Sport, carbon black, media pack, visibility pack, grey leather, heated seats, sun protection glass, voice control, Eibach ProKit, 19" 166 style wheels, e-maps ECU remap to 325hp and 640NM, top speed limiter removed
two totally different cars, especially from the way they develop their brute force.
The Alpina does everything very effortless and subtle compared to the M5 wanting to be revved and screaming to deliver what it is best at.
Both brilliant cars in their own right, but it really depends on the type of driver to decide which one is better for yourself.
I think I'd have one of each.

If you go too M5Board you can read that M5 have big problems whith the SMG tranny. A lot of the people have changed 1 too 3 times the tranny 
So if I had the chance too buy M5 or a B5 I would pick a B5 any time but whith Mpack of course
