I remember that claim. The insured did that to his car claiming drove off the side of a mountain and all those holes were from tree branches lol. He's in jail now.

From what I've read, you'll get what is affectionately known as "red cog of death" (a red gear symbol) displayed on the dash and your car would just stop running and you can't get out of gear. It has happened to earlier build M5s but it doesn't mean it happens to most of them. I'm sure it's still a very low percentage of the actual numbers of cars build in that time period. You just hear about it a lot of the forums.
