Hi Friends:
My wife and I are in Carlsbad CA visiting my son and family. So, my son and I ended up behind an M5 at a light in his AMG SL65. The M5 moved out under modest power on green and we started to pull up beside him--at which point he took off. So, my son floored the MB, and the M5 might as well have been standing still. Oh well.
We had the top down and the AC on, while he was alone. He may have had the AC on. Of course my son's car should beat the M5, but it was not pretty a pretty race at all.
I am truly attracted to the M5. But, while the price, looks, and handling/feel are right (especially with the visual update coming), I could never own one because of the antiquated SMG (or crippled manual), horrible gas mileage (at least compared, for example, to the MB and Z06 V-8's), and relatively low-torque engine (not good at all around town). I really hope BMW updates the M5's performance/mileage features soon. I'd really like to be able to consider one. As it stands, we probably will end up with an AMG CLS if I decide to keep the old Z06 or with a 550i and a new Z06 otherwise. I wish I could justify choosing an M5 or M6 over the AMG CLS, but there is no way unless things change dramatically.

Don, you're alive!! It's good to hear from you.
Nice story BTW. I'm not surprised at all that your son's 65 humiliated the M5. That car is stupid fast. So your next car is going to be a CLS63?
Haha, I don't blame you. Seems like AMG is kicking the crap out of M's these days as far as straight line performance goes.

Howdy stranger,
Haha... The M5 owner should have know what a super beast the SL65 is. On my way up to San Jose Saturday I encountered a CLS63. Didn't even try to bait him nor did he even want to play. Just continued on my way on up at a brisk pace.

Hi Guys:
It's nice to hear from all of you. The only problem with both of my plans is that we might not end up owing a BMW. But, I can always race them and post on the E60 forums. And, I'll always thing that my 545i, and BMW's in general, are great cars.
It's kind on interesting. My son got to be a good enough track driver to do well in the pro classes as an amateur. He says that his favorite sports car (which doesn't include the new SL) is the 02 Z06 he owned (like mine except silver), and he has owned or driven a lot of sports cars. His last was a 600 HP new-model twin-turb0 Porsche vert--to which he preferred the Z06. Says he would buy a new one if he had a place to put it.
As I recall, the new Z06 won some sort of fast sports car shoot out lately--published in one of the big 3 US mags. And, as I recall, the emphasis was on track times in and out of specific curves, etc.
