With all the discussion between the SMG and 6MT transmissions in the M5 (and the fact that the 6MT came from the e39 cars), I wondered if the manual transmission in my 550i is the same as that in the M5. I think its a damn good trasmission.

Just curious if they're one and the same.

Part number for 07 550i manual gearbox = 23 00 7 571 425
Part number for 07 M5 manual gearbox = 23 00 2 283 151


I suspect the answer to your question is "No".

the type of transmission in the 550i is "GS6-53BZ - THGZ"


the type of transmission in the M5 is "GS6-53DZ - THGR"

...whatever that means

ya its probably different but you never know... just like how TV manufactures make the same TV but put a different model number on them for TVs going to different distributors to discourage price war for price matching... ie Best Buy and Circuit City.

pretty sure the M5 has closer gear ratios than the 550s...not 100% sure tho

MT on M5 is a carry-over from the E39 tranny...not the same.
