Default 2008 BMW M5 engine replacement?

I purchased a 2008 M5 that had the complete engine swap taken out. I want to put the car back together but don't have 13K for the 5.0L V10 engine. What motor would fit that I could swap into the car that wouldn't run that kind of money?

with enough time and money you fan fit anything in there.....if it were me i would go find an E92 M3 engine and drop it in there....probably more of them out there at junkyards to choose from at lower prices than the S85 engine.

consider dropping in the V8s found in the X5M, X6M and new M5....grab a used DCT or Manual tranny while ur at it....sounds like a fun project!

Will any 5-series motor fit in an M5? I'm not sure what, if any, modifications were made to the engine compartment that might affect the dimensions, or motor mounts, etc.

Given how tightly integrated the engine and transmission are with the car's electronics putting anything in other than a V10 will be extremely difficult, is likely to cost you far more than any money you save on a cheaper engine and will kill the resale value. Save the tears - either go with the V10 or sell the car as-is.
