Yes, that is correct - Xi's are equipped with transfer cases.

And yes, they may, in fact get undue stress from varying overall diameters between front and rear wheels.

However.

If you calculate your overall diameters and choose sizes accordingly, you should not have any issues. I say "should not" because basically, from all the members that have done it, evidence is unanimous that the setup will work without issues. But, of course, there's always the odd chance that your transfer case may start leaking - who knows?!

If above is insufficient evidence, then consider the fact that BMW offered (or offers? IDK) an OEM staggered setup as an upgrade - those were the 124s with Xi offsets.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the information. I've never owned an AWD car and was studying up on them for my own curiosity. Perhaps I may go AWD on my next car.

Not true. If it were, BMW wouldn't offer it on the X5 (My truck has 315's in the rear and 275's up front). They also wouldn't offer staggered on the 124's for the XI E60.

Here you go, if you don't believe me:

LOL! How many times have I posted this link on this forum over the years.

What spacers did you use? How did the wheels sit?

I have the 530xi, I'm thinking of buying the 189 styles wheels 18" staggered set up, can I mount this set on on my XI without any problem? what do you guys think? will this set up damage anything?

- Front: 225/40/18 offset 34
- Rear: 255/35/18 offset 37

There´s only 2mm difference with the overall diameter = shouldn´t be any problem. But you know those diameters are 16mm smaller than the OEM 245/40/18. You could have thicker rubbers to protect the rims
You can do the math here
