The JL sub is great, but with a sub like that i would probably get a better amplifier than the alpine, possibly with more power than the sub, but keep the gain on the amp down, remember its not loudness that fry's subs, its amplifier distortion and clipping, so the amp is probably the most important part of the install. Ive had a rockford class d mono amp for a couple of years now, works great, no problems, check them out.

so I've been doing some research about these subwoofers

I'm thinking of getting 1 10inch woofers JL Audio 10W3v3-4 and Alpine MONO MRP-M500

total: $350 shipped with wiring kit (8-gauge)

what you guys think?

It depends on how loud your going and how much you're willing to spend. I would go with the JL 12" w6 with the JL 500/1 sub amp.

The only Alpine amp I would recommend is a PDX series........... Although what you're looking at is a pretty decently priced combo.

Well i tried many subs on my car... This is what i can suggest from my experience...

Sealed vs ported box....

sealed box will give you a clean sound but not as loud as ported box

ported box will give you louder sound but less clear.

So if you are going for one sub it is ideal to go with ported box on e60 since trunk is well sealed and when i tried sealed box, bass wasnt coming to the cabin enough.

JL sub is nice but i dont know if W3 is going to be enough with that Alpine amp to have enough bass or might blew the sub out since amp is much more powerful than sub itself..
I would go for at least w6 with sub but JL is too pricy for what they are worth in my opinion....

In my opinion, i get sub that can handle more power than what you want... because when you want more bass and crack that bass up, more than likely you will blow that sub because when you crack up the volume it will get distorted no matter if you have Re-Q or Cleansweep and that is what it cause to blow sub... trust me i had this experience and i actually made my sub to caught on fire because of that..

If you are going for one sub.. this is my recommanded setting even though it will be pricy but it is way worth it at the end and i loved it when i had it. Not too much bass just right amount.

1 12" Alpine Type R
1 Alpine PDX 1.600 (it is compact and has alot of power and right now bestbuy is selling this for like $300 right now instead of 550)
1 ported box
JL Cleansweep or MTX Re-Q

what i like about alpine pdx 1.600 is if sub is blown or something is wrong, it protects amp by itself so that it wont make amp to go bad..

Currently i have PDX 1.1000 with 2 12" type X with sealed box.
little bit pricer than what you found but this will more than likely make you happy.

Thanks for the detailed info, I was looking at the TypeR as well, but I don?t really want crazy crazy bass...
can you recommend some good amp that will power the W3's just right, it must have speaker-level inputs.

the alpine pdx would be good for one w3. 600 watts rms.

it will be good with PDX... i actually looked again and compared with w3 and type R... the price you get for 10" w3, you can get 12" type R. just i personally dont like MRP m-500... they dont sound clean as PDX.

the reason why i keep recommand Type R is the structure of sub is solid than JL... type R use Rubber on the ring, which is more durable than foam that JL use... so it will last longer.

You said you dont want crazy crazy bass... well I recommanded set up so that even though it will sound crazy crazy bass but you can always turn it down, which means less distortion and less likely you will blow the sub... I always suggest people to get more sound than what they want so that they have more range to control them than wanted more bass and crack it up through I-Drive and burn the sub. I was that guy before that got sub that would be enough but later i wanted more bass and craving more so i turned it up in both amp and through I drive, it burned....

I'm not looking to spend 300+ on amp

I thought you said the MONO MRP-M500 would over power the JL audio 10W3v3-4

should I get a lower powered amp?

I talked to my buddy who work in the audio shop and says MRP-M500 doesnt produce that much power than what it says....
If you dont want to spend that much money on amp , then MRP -M500 is the only choice because it is cheap but after i found out it will underpower so you are probably not going to get sound that you are looking for probably.

I have seen MRP-M500 gone bad quickly .... i will keep looking for amp that will last long and good while price is low..
