What do you guys think about the difference between steel wheels and alloy wheels for winter setup for a 545? Which one would you recommend??

The Tech Talk in Sept issue of Roundel suggested steel wheels due to the heavier weight (better traction), cheaper, and easier to repair than alloy. They were recommending this setup for a '97 318ti, but can we use the same argument for the 545?

Any opinions??

My two cents would be that I can't imagine that steel wheels on a 545 would do anything significant to improve winter traction. Given that the car is already 3800 lbs +/-, an extra 100 lbs (if that much?) from the steel wheels would buy you much. BTW, aren't there snow plows in Chicagoland ? If it were me, I would go with a good set of snow tires for the winter - and if I had the $$$ those snow tires would be mounted on a dedicated set of alloy wheels.

I lived in IN for a while and made regular trips to Chicago - I dooo miss the winter...

Forget the steel wheels, where would you even find suitable 17" ones?
The 545i needs minimun 17" wheels.

Buy a set of winter tires to your standard 17" alloys and buy some nice 18" or 19" summer wheels!
