I just spoke to tirereack to order a winter wheel/tire package and the rep there recommended the Pirelli W210 Snowsports for my 545 sport. Anyone have any experience with these tires? I am looking for a good combination of performance handling with excellent snow/slush/ice traction and good tread wear. I am going to be mounting these on 17" rims. Any other recommendations or good experiences with other tires in the snow?

Did he mention anything about the Dunlop M3's? I'm pretty happy with them but I can't compare them to the Pirellis...

I think the M3's are sold out most places. But i would definitely try to get them, they are great.

What should I expect to pay for a set of M3's with rims? $2,000 installed?

Looks like 245/40 18 Dunlop M3s are in stock according to tirerack's site.

I got a set of 245/40 18 Dunlop M3s plus two 8j x18" (124 style) rims and I very satisfied on snow/rain/cold places.

Dunlop Winter Sport M3's are great. I used them on my winter 18" BMW 124 wheeels from bmwwheels.com. I drove through NE Indiana just after a blizzard and they were great on snow covered roads. They also work well on clear roads in the winter. I highly recommend them.

I think the preferred size in the M3s was a 17". That's probably the size that's hard to find...

Watch out for the top speed rating of the W210s - I used Pirelli W240s last year which are higher rated. I was also advised insurance may be upset if you put a lower speed rated tire than advised by the manufacturer.

Ask for Gary at Tirerack - he knows what he's talking about!

I'm running Michelin Pilot Alpins right now and am Quite Satisfied. No issues to date. Good in the snow and still good in the dry.
I ran Pirelli 210's on previous cars and had good luck with them as well although that was a few years ago. I'm not sure if they changed the compund or anything.
I did find that they wore quickly on my M3 (but that proably had a lot to do with me having to look out the side windows while driving.
