Hi,
I was looking at a low cost option for winter tires. Run Flats seem to always be harder to find and way more expensive.

Is it possible and what are the risks using non run flat winter tires on my current rims (other than not having a spare)?

I found a set of Yokohama Ice Guards Winter Tires 245/45 R18 for $700 bucks that were only used one season.

Any other recommendations welcome!

Thanks

From what I have seen, most are going with non-RFT for winter (myself included). Make sure you have a shop that will mount used tires before you go that route. That is not an OE size either.
Here is a good bang for the buck tire

Hey,
Thanks for the info. That is a good deal through Tirerack. Thanks.
The tire size is what is on the vehicle now. From what I understand the 245/45 R18 is standard on the 528i with sports package?

hey, thanks for all your help on this.
I had an additional question. I just found a mint set of rims and tires. Beyern Mesh 18" with 235/50 R 18 Dunlop Winter Sport tires
It says they will fit most 5 or 7 series. Do you know (and how do you know) if they would fit a 2008 528i?

You should stay within 3% for safety sake. That is definitely too much difference!

Stock Tire - 245/40R18 - 235/50R18

Overall Diameter: 25.71 in 653.03 mm Overall Diameter: 27.25 in 692.15 mm

Sidewall Height: 3.85 in 97.79 mm Sidewall Height: 4.62 in 117.34 mm

Radius: 12.85 in 326.39 mm Radius: 13.62 in 345.94 mm

Circumference: 80.77 in 2051.5 mm Circumference: 85.60 in 2174.2 mm

Revs per Mile: 809.0 Revs per Mile: 763.3

Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h Speedometer1: 56.6 mph 94.3 km/h

This is a great website/tool to compare tire sizes http://tinyurl.com/2yc8h

The other consideration you might need to consider is if your car has TPMS or TPM system. The first has wheel mounted sensors and if you use wheels w/o them you'll get alerts every time you drive. Could be annoying. If you have the TPM system that uses the ABS system to measure differences in tire rotation to detect one or more flattening tires. Best to stay within the rolling radius of your original equipment tires to reduce speedometer error. That calculator will give you the stats by comparing optional tire sizes.

As you probably already know, a taller - skinnier tire works better in snow that a super low-profile set-up.
