alrighty, winter is almost rolling in and this time we don't want to leave our baby locked inside our garage because it's only got summers tires on. our dealer offered us a winter tire package here and i think they'll store our summers for us for roughly >$3000CAD. that seems CRAZY for winters.

is it possible if we could just buy a set of 17" or 18" steelies with some winter tires on them for much less? i'm guessing we would have the problem of the tire pressure monitor system warning us. i guess we can deal with that for the winter. plus black steelies on our black car won't look so bad and in Ottawa, our winters can get REALLY nasty with the LOADS of salt they put on our streets.

have you tried searching tirerack.com for some inexpensive options. A number of members have recc'd and purchased from tirerack.com for winter set-up options.

You could also browse the classified section and see if any members are trying to get rid of some oem wheels for a fair price. Other options are craigslist and ebay.

Steel rims are really your choice. I believe most tire shops can install the TPMS on the snow rims so you won't have that problem. Tirerack.com installs TPMS also if needed. I've got a few guys in Toronto that sell BMW replica rims and the last quote for 17" with Kumho tires was $1,200 - much less than $3,000 at the dealership and better than black steel rims. But that pricing may have been without TPMS...

In addition to the thread GENEaTALS linked to, there are at least a dozen more threads about winter setups on the forums. Don't forget, many of us have been around here since 2004 when the E60 first came out -- as far as I can remember, they had winter back then too!

TPM sensors are only another $250. I say go with the 17" replica's!

hmm, that sounds like a decent option to go with. now replicas, do you mean some random rim manufacturer designs a similar BMW style rim?

where are these places in TO? i go to TO very often so it wouldn't be too much of a problem for me to buy there.

What I would do it buy some used 124's from someone on here, and throw on some Dunlop M3 or Blizzak tires (with TPMS) from tirerack.

That's my plan.

not a bad idea. how much are sellers typically selling them for? are dunlop m3 and blizzak tires the best?

lol. mmm i'm worried about preserving the look of the winter set of 124's. should i preserve the look? honestly, winter here in Ottawa is brutal. the salt on the ground is gross so as it accumulates, it's gonna be tough to clean cuz it's cold too. haha.
