Hi All,

I am considering getting my rear windows and windscreen tinted (aftermarket) and would like to know what is the percentage of tint BMW use as the optional extra please?

Are you trying to get your windows tinted by BMW? I do not recommend that because it's pricey. When I first placed my order for 06 325, I also told BMW to tint my windows for me without asking for a price. When I went to pick up my car, I realize I had to pay about $450 with tax. You can say I wasn't pleased because I only expected to pay an additional $50-$75 more compared to other body shops. Please specify what color car you have because if you have black, you might not want so dark because 35% tints on black look a lot darker compared to a vehicle with 35% tints with a titanium body color (for example).

Here are some basic tint percentages starting at 70%, 50%, 35%, and 5%. There are other percentages but those are most common. The uncommon ones for example can be 75%, 45%, 40%, and 15% that I've seen.

I am having a local window tinting company do it as "aftermarket".

The colour is Metallic silver.

The cop that pulled you over was just being a dick. Maybe that time of the month where a ticket quota is need to be met like in NYC. I've also got pulled over once on my 325 with 35% tints around the end of the month. It only happened once with my 3 year lease on that car. He pulled me right on the exit, in the middle of my commute to work, and said why were my tints so dark that he could not see my cousin (driving him on the way to work) in the rear passenger seat? The funny thing is he pulled me the darkest shade area possible at that time because I was surrounded by trees with absolutely no sun. It's quite obvious he pulled me over because I was driving a BMW because everyone on this board that lives in NYC or around the tri-state knows that most cars that have tints don't have it up to par with the tint laws.

I had my 2008 535xi tinted a week or so ago in Bellevue, WA. $245 + tax at a detail shop (Bradley's) by an itinerant tinter (say that 3 times!). Anyway, I wanted it to match the tint my wife has on her 2004 X5 (she bought it as a CPO from BMW Seattle). The tinter said the film was rated at 40%, meaning that it blocks 60% of the light. It works for me, not too dark when driving at night, blends in well with the Sport Package window moldings, doesn't look like a drug dealer is driving the car.
