I think he is trying to rip you off.
My guess is he is talking about the felt that lines the edge of the window openings. These parts can collect hairs which might get under your tint film. Any skilled installer should have no problem getting the tint installed without removing that felt.
My installer simply put blue painters tape over the felt so the hairs would be trapped down. Then he got the tint installed and dried it a bit, and removed the tape. I left my windows up for a week, and no problems.
The only other thing I can think of he might be talking about is installing felt on the inside of the door? Maybe because he thinks the tint will get scratched when you roll the windows down? I did not have this done to my car, and I roll my windows down all the time. No scratches. But on my 325i, my tint got scratched on my rear passenger window. That could be what he's talking about, too?

Spot on.... The top trim strips on some bmw's are hard plastic instead of rubber, cheap film will scratch very easily and some guys felt them to protect the film, a high quality film wouldn't need the felt but then for $160 it wouldn't be that great a film.
Actually thinking about tint...... What makes a good and i mean a good super top job, whats "good enough" and what's "excellent"
Will post as a seperate topic
