My car has auto-dim rearview and side mirrors, plus rain sensor and red alarm blinker under the mirror. I want to upgrade it to one that has Homelink garage opener & compass. Anybody know if this is a simple plug and play installation? Is the correct connector already in place or do I have to do wiring modification? Thanks in advance!

P.S. After seeing the winshield cracked in the loaner 525i I am afraid to do it myself now!!

Since you already have the wiring for the mirror dimming, etc., you might be good to go for adding the homelink unit. I don't know for sure but here's a quick peek at a post from a while ago where someone went from the standard mirror to the more advanced one:

In terms of removing the mirror, the instructions I got says take the rain sensor cover off in two pieces (left and right), remove the wire connector, and strike the bottom of the mirror towards the windshield with the ball of your thumb to pop it loose. If you yank it you risk breaking the windshield. That scares me. How hard do you have to strike it to get it off without breaking anything?

I got the hometronic mirror last week from bmw, and left them to fit it, but they gave it back to me not working!

I have gone back to explain it doesnt work at all, and, confirming what others have said in posts relating to this mirror, my car's wiring harness only had 2 wires going to the mirror connector block, which was all the simple original mirror needed, but the new hometronic mirror's connector block, although the same size/shape connector, has about 8 wires, so bmw are looking into the matter and say they will let me know tomorrow if they can get it working. I might figure it out myself from advice on this forum before they do....!

for reference, my car is an early e60 (late 2003) , so maybe later cars have sufficient wiring harness in the car ready for this mirror.

Hey Blah
Whatever you do DO NOT follow those instructions for removing the mirror!!!!!! I think they must be deliberately misleading so BMW can sell loads more windscreens as you will break it if you hit the mirror.
All you need to do is remove the plastic trim pieces from the mirror stalk and then ROTATE the mirror stalk about a quarter turn. It will pop right off.
I know this as I had to have a windscreen replaced due to a crack and the screen guy showed me how to do it.
Hope this helps.
