I picked up my 07 550 last week. I was going to have Maya DSL 20x10.5 w/ 295/25/20 and 20x9 w/ 255/30/20 Michelin PS2's installed this coming tuesday. But since listening to many of you I am really waffling on th e 20" dia. wheels since the wide tire size only comes in an extremely low profile. I really don't care for the look of the ultra small sidewall of the 295 rear tire not to mention the comments about "beware of potholes". I really like the BBS LM 3 pcs. but it is a 19" dia. The best looking E60's I've seen were wearing 20's...........help me out before Tuesday.

Go with 20's and drop some mula in your piggy bank every week for future wheel replacement.

20", I have them and drive in NJ and NY and so far potholes have not been an issue.

 

im rolling on 19's low profile rims.. 20s shouldnt be a problem..

I have 20s and they look great. The ride has also been great. The car handles like a dream. I probably helps that I have coilovers to dial in the suspension setting just right.

That said, if you're a performance enthusiast, do note that bigger wheels and tires will diminish your car's speed performance. Even though my car has 3-piece forged wheels that are lighter their increased size leads to increase rolling resistance. At least this is what I've been reading in some magazines. I can understand the logic and that's also probably why Dinan only makes 19" wheels for the E60 even though it's obvious the popular market demands 20s nowadays.

But man, those Maya DLS will look sweeeeet!!!

Why do you buy a car, that is designed to handle well and give you a good driving experience.

Then you just go and ruin the balance of the chassis by putting redicilous and heavy 20" wheels and propably
even spacers, which destroy the geometry...

Negative sides with big wheels: weight (exp. unsprung weight is poison to car), harsh ride, redused performance, fuel consumption, stress watching the potholes

Positive: Looks? (subjective)

I mean if you want to pimp your ride and just pose driving 20m/h along the street - why do you need BMW??

 

My wheels are 3-piece forged wheels that are lighter than the stock 18s. The bigger size with wider dimensions improve traction and handling so the performance is increased contrary to your view. But I do admit that the increase rolling resistance limits my speed performance some what... As for potholes, I'd be avoiding them even if I had 15" wheels and huge rubber... hehe
