I've used a K&N drop-in filter in my old 550i before converting the stock intake to a Dinan intake. I also run a K&N in my Accord (7+ years) and in my GSX-R (3 months). Zero problems. In the 1 year my 550i ran with the K&N, the car ran flawlessly (even with the charcoal filter removed).
As mentioned, problems occur if the filter is over-oiled. I was told by a Dinan tech that the best thing to do when a K&N needs re-oiling is to buy a new filter because from the factory, each filter is made with just the right amount of oil.

Even the stock filter has too much oil in it, i lightly rinse it, let it dry than use... Dryer side is better than being on the oilyer side

I've run K&N's on all my cars for the last 15 years, and have NEVER had any negative issues. 
As for HP, it's not really noticeable, if might be a couple of HP, that's all.

Thinking about getting a replacement K&N panel filter for my 550. Anyone ever tried CRC MAF cleaner on their mafs?
Any probs? I've used it on my Nissans, and always had good luck with it......
