Thanks again. I also bought a hanger/bumper like you mention that would get me 1/4." I am going to look for one that will get me 1/2" tomorrow at other auto supply stores.

Remember...if you're talking about the hanger measuring 1/2" while it's in your hands, then once it's mounted, the weight of the muffler will pull it down somewhat (depending of course on how rigid/flexible the hanger itself is).

In this case, I would use the smaller (1/4") hanger.

After all is said and done, however, I do realize that it's a matter of personal preference. There isn't ONE correct way of doing it. To each his own.

My B&B required a newly fabricated mount (although a smaller rubber hangar may have done the trick).? Mine were hangin' low as well so the mount point was modified and all is well.?
You can always try a hose clamp around the stock hangar to "squeeze" it thus bringing the tips up, but it is really a bandaid.? At least you could see how it looks tighter to the bumper.

(If only I got a commission for every B&B on this board...)
One of the most hit files on my website is the B&B clip.

realtyman,

Yes, I forgot to thank you. I listened to the soundclips you provided even before I heard the ones on the B&B site. It was enough to convince me that the sound was what I was looking for.

So here it is.....thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I probably won't try it though. I am looking for a permanent 1/2" solution. But, honestly, I think my tips look very good the way they are.

Hi all:

Here is an update of my B&B exhaust installation. After B&B did their excellent reinstallation (see above), I decided, as others have, that the exhaust hung a little low. So, I went in search of the perfect fixes. I found two standard hangers (one each for the front and year B&B prongs) that looked like that would raise the exhaust about ? inch. Since these hangers were not as wide as the originals, I also bought two donuts, which also looked like they would raise the exhaust about ? inch, to fill the extra space. (all brands and part numbers available upon request). Hangers of the type mentioned probably could be cut in half to fill the space also.

I then took my car to Greg, the owner of Mighty Muffler in Phoenix. Greg is ?the? muffler man; he did all sorts of interesting things with the after-market exhaust systems of my 3 RX-7?s?one of which I still have. Greg put the new hangers/donuts on, and the height was perfect. However, the exhaust moved to the left a tad. He bent the rear B&B prong a little, as much as he dared, and remedied the problem about 50%. The result, at this point, definitely was acceptable?much better than where I started from an overall perspective.

But, I improvised a solution at home to solve the rest of the minor problem. I had some old-style adjustable bungee cords. I shortened one of them appropriately to only a several inches, cutting away the excess, and hooked one end to the donut/hanger nearest the rear and hooked the other end to some sort of bolt protruding from the car on the other side of the exhaust. I was lucky enough to find, in my ?bins? of odds and ends, a black plastic on the outside ?nut? (looks kind of like a valve-stem cap), with a black plastic washer attached, that fit. The nut/washer looks ?on-purpose? and should keep the bungee from slipping off on that side. It should not slip off on the other side. A brief test shows that the bungee system works. However, it remains to be seen how long it will take street and exhaust heat to take their tolls on the system. I have some other thoughts if, and when, this system fails. I?ll try to revive this thread again if, and when, the system fails and will report on my revised system.

Below are some photos for comparison with where B&B left off. One is a little blurry, but it?s good enough. There is a very strange reflection in one photo that makes it appear that a "piece of metal" is on the bumper/valance. But, there is nothing there. And, the photos were taken in the shade.

donv,

The muffler looks great [now].
You finally sound like you're satisfied with this application. Good job.
Thanks Centurion. I have the idea. It's pretty much what I thought except I didn't know about looking for alternative rubber hangers. Great, I'll probably give it a try in the near future. Who knows? Tomorrow maybe if our new mattress gets delivered in time for me to get out.

Cool. No problem.
One last piece of advice to make the job even easier...use WD-40 on the OEM hanger to slide it out and spray some on your newer (smaller) hanger to slide it in. (Geez, that sounded kinda like a script in a porn film)

I'd say DO NOT spray WD 40 on rubber - ever. WD40 eats rubber in time. Find a good silicone spray - you can even buy the best type at any dive shop. Silicone will not harm rubber. Lithium grease is also good, albeit a bit messy to apply. Sprays like a mist, but it turns to white grease on contact. Good stuff. Get it at any parts store.

One good use for WD40 is to clean bugs off the front of your car after a long drive. Bugs wash right off, but do not leave the film on the car for long.

Santiago.

Thanks, and its good to "see" you again. Yep, I now am extra happy with it. We'll see how long my bungee lasts. Happy B&Bing.

Update: I tested the Bungee system yesterday, and it worked very well. The exhaust system moved back to the left a small amount. So, I made several adjustments this morning. First, I added tension at the rear mounting point. I used tarp hard-rubber hold-down straps (several lengths came in a "plastic tin" along with many S-hooks). It turned out that this system worked so well that I removed the bungee--which might have been overly susceptible to road and exhaust heat. And, of course, over time, a bungee will lose some elasticity if streached tightly. Still, if the exhaust moves to the left again, then I will reinstall the bungee or add more tension in the rear. Later today I will post some pics of both types of installation and the bungee, itself.

Here are the photos. The first shows the bungee, while the second shows the bungee installation. The third shows the tarp hold-down installation. On the third, it is hard to see that 1 loop of an S-hook goes through the holes in both ends of the strap and that the other loop hooks on the other side of the rubber hanger/bumper and the donut on its other side.

donv,

Looks complex, but you're right...the way you've got the bungee cord sitting a few centimeters above the pipes looks like they may be susceptible to the tremendous amount of heat. That heat shield above the muffler tells me it gets awfully hot in that corner of the car.

The "installations" were easy. It just took a while to round up parts that would work--including the hangers/donuts. And, it took a while to fiddle with all the options, given the parts, in doing the "installations." Remember, all, I have the brands and part numbers of the things I used.
