Tuning boxes

anybody know if these diesel tuning boxes are any good. They quote better bhp and mpg. I know that you would have to take them out if it was going back to the dealer. Do they work?

As with a lot of things, there are good ones and bad ones. The bad ones are really bad, and are little more than a resistor added in to "fool" the car's sensors and pour in more fuel, whatever the conditions. Saying that, the good ones are good. My experience is with two 184bhp 330d Touring's, one manual, and one auto. With the huge torque of the 330, the "seat of the pants" experience is mild, but against the clock, the effect is very useful. When I first bought mine, I did a few "experiments". I had the Auto at the time, so my gearchanging/clutch skills didn't apply. A 0 to 70mph test repeatedly gave about a one second improvement. This translated to much better overtaking ability when "queue-hopping" at speed. All manufacturers say that fuel economy will be improved. My experience is that it stayed the same under like-for-like driving.
My box made no difference to the amount of smoke created under hard acceleration. I had no reliability issues with either car (running on cheapo supermarket diesel, with no additives) over a combined 180,000 miles.
I never bothered removing the box when the cars went for servicing, but mine was a type that you could switch off, via a cabin mounted switch, so most of the time, the box was off, I just used it when I wanted to play!
In conclusion, go for the well known names (Tunit, PSI, van AAken etc). Do consider having your ECU remapped rather than an add-on chip - see the associated threads on this forum. It is a relatively cheap way of getting more performance. Don't forget to tell your insurance company

was asked too many times, so in short:
BOXes do NOT make you fly
, only remap for diesel.For petrol, sport catalyst, pipes, headers, etc., replacement or drilled engines, superchargers. The rest is TALE
