Well the sound of the V8 is totally different!
My previous car was an Audi S6 (v8) with Miltek exhausts and it sounded like a thunder!

But it is also true that the 35d when driven hard changes the exhaust note!
I think it is because of that "thing" that this cars have on the exhaust tip that opens and closes!
If you put it always opened (removing the little rubber pipe that controls it) well you will have that exhaust note all the time!

Also the SMG become faster when you run hard for 5-10 minutes . But it doesn't upshift like an Formula1 car

Ummm i'm not really sure it's about that flap. In fact when i drove my car with the stock exhaust i could hear little to no difference when the flap was open or closed or driving hard or not. Now with the quad i can really make it come alive if i heat it enough

Really now! I don't get it why it does that. I would really want to have that sound all the time. Trust me when i say that it growls so much that it vibrates and it really feels from behind the steering wheel. Oddly enough is the fact that it can be heard at low to mid revs and at higher revs the exhaust isn't noticeable anymore (maybe because the engine overlaps the sound).

Strange that no 535d owner experienced what i'm saying here.

I know what you are talking about...........it only occurs when the engine map changes to heat up the particulate filter , i have removed all of the exhaust system

silencer boxes and am running straight through pipes from the particulate filter back , so the sudden emittance of sound from the diesel exhaust is quite a refreshing

change.

As for the flap in the oem tail pipes iirc it is to increase back pressure to help spool up the small turbo so as to minimise any lag.

Hello Nick,
But did you remove the flap from the exhaust?

Yeah that is what i said to him through PM. I will go asap to a custom exhaust shop to eliminate the rear muffler and put a straight pipe with dual tips. I will think in a quad exhaust system later.

PS: I saw you in the other day in A5 (Lx-Cascais) at lunch time, chasing a S320cdi and another car that i can't remember. I was exiting to Oeiras when you passed. It is funny how easily our cars play with the E/CLS/S 320cdi's. I caught once the new 745d in A2 and that "cruise" is fast, but ours are faster but it is a close race stock to stock. We got open road and made more than once 150-260km/h runs.
