General Exclaim UHP is a good value for the $$$

Consider the following performance tires w/ touring bias (looks like you care more abt going straight than taking corners) w/ great reviews and great pricing:
(If you don't mind using non "branded" tires, these tires are GOOD)

Kumho Ecsta SPT

Hankook Ventus K104

Falken 452 -

The nice thing about the Tire Rack reviews is that you can filter them by make of car. Based on those reviews from other BMW owners I replaced my Michelin Pilot Sport AS tires with the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S and could not be happier with the comfortable and quiet ride. I ended up getting them at Discount Tire. If you add in the shipping and the cost of the pro-rated Road Hazard Warranty from Tire Rack the price is a "wash". Also, through Discount Tire you have the option of getting the free replacement Road Hazard Warranty.

I went from the OEM Dunlop RFT's to Pirelli P-zero nero, and The Ultimate Driving Machine became The Ultimate Lousy Machine. Maybe I'm exagerating a little! But seriously, I'm very disappointed with the Pirellis. Fortunately, it's time for new tires again an d this time I intend on getting the PS2.

Does anyone know the difference in the different types of PS2s on offer at Tire Rack and Costco?

i have them on my 19's....cost is great, treadlife has been reported as good by a few members..handling for everyday driving is good as well...thru the twisties is a bit to be desired tho...

He lives in Houston.....I doubt he'll find any twisties there!!! So he'll definitely need a good highway tire....I have been runnning Falken tires for several years now and I like them...I just got some new 452's for the rears and they seem wider then my previous ST115's, so that eliminates my tire width issue..if they handle as good as my 115's I would recommend them.

+1 for discounttiredirect.com and the reviews you can find on there as well...great site and good prices on tires.

I need to replace my Bridgestone RFT's and need some recommendations. My E60 is a daily driver and I don't track my car. I'm looking for something quiet for +3 hour road trips and of course great handling.
I'd go for the best deal you can get on non run flats from one of the premium makers (Michelin, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear, maybe Pirelli). I dumped RFT for Dunlop Sport Maxxs and they are noticably better on broken roads than the RFTs, I like Bridgestones because they feel soft and grippy but ride well. Michelins are also quality. Truth is unless you're an extremely sensitive you will not be able to tell from these 5. The testers in the UK say Goodyear F1 Asymetrics are empirically the best.

M+S, doesn't that mean it's a winter tire?

I would agree with the Michelin recommendation, although they're usually quite pricey. I have also had good experiences with Dunlop Sport Maxx and Continental Sport Contact and I hear Falken 452 is a good low price alternative, but I have yet to try them.
The Pirelli is an all season tire.

Does Houston need all season tire?

I'd say go with summer tires. Yokohama also has good tires.

I can advise you on what I would avoid. The Michelin Pilots are noisy, Dunlop Sports less noisy, but both overheat on hot asphalt at high speeds (80+mph) and tramline on uneven roads. Goodyear F1,DS G3 were good but now replaced with an unproven tread design.

Thanks to everyone who provided input. I had to purchase a tire either today or tomorrow because my rear passenger tire was literally falling apart. Last night, I was returning to Houston from a New Orleans road trip with the family when my car developed a thumping sound from the rear passenger side. The sound was the tread separating from the sidewall. I continued to drive at a lower speed and have to admit that I was impressed with how well the tire held up.

Now to the tire pick. I was leaning toward an A/S tire for better tread life and reduced cost, but the climate in Houston only requires a summer tire so I splurged on the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. With the PS2s, it feels as if I have a totally different car. Ride quality has impoved 10 fold. Harshness is a thing of the past. I really wish I would have made the switch sooner or before my road trip to New Orleans. My ears would have been spared all my wife's complaints about the jittery ride.

I had the Pilot Sport PS2 on my M3 and replaced them with Bridgestone RE050A Pole Position and was thrilled by the difference. The Bridgestones handled way way better, were actually quieter and CHEAPER.
