paint. If I were you, I would get the new LCI tail lamps in a smoked version.
Something like this...
Smoked OEM Tails
These are the older version of the OEM's, but the new LED ones are sure to be available soon.

400 for tail lights is just a little too much for me Calton, although, they do look nice

PS - these are also available. I know these were a Group Buy not too long ago. They're much cheaper, have the LED's, are smoked, but are not OEM. They also don't cause the notorious warning triangle in iDrive, due to the resistors. I STRONGLY considered these...

I just got an estimate to tint my windows today. I am going with the huber optik ceramic and I will stay with the legal % for my state (VA). I don't want a hassle, nor do I want the cost to remove/replace. I will used 50% front and 34% rear. The cost is $350 installed with tax. Having it done on Friday.
The demo this guy uses involves a rotating wooden box with different tint materials on each of 4 panes with a heat lamp inside. Holding your hand 6" away as he rotates the box from pane to pane ending with the ceramic. A marked reduction in heat felt is what made up my mind on the ceramic and I felt the price difference is well worth it.

Found this site GMGRacing.com, the owner (James Sofronas) races in the Speed World Challenge GT & Touring class on speed channel. Anyways they offer a smoked tail light service for all cars. Simply remove your taillights and send them in (usually a 5 day turn around) or they can get you a new set of rear tail-lights and ship them to you smoked. Even better if you live in So. Cali. you can just visit their shop. Best thing is its only $175, I might give them a shot.
