That will require a new GSM TCU with the latest code, $199 a year, and it is not guaranteed to work.

What possibilities exist for doing anything along these lines with a tethered blue-tooth phone connection?

I believe I saw an announcement for allowing email syncs that would allow incoming emails to be read back to you.

None thru the iDrive MOST network.

You have to have an Assist account, a CIC and a GSM TCU coded for Online Services to receive the BMW Search suite of Internet services.

The announced Blackberry integration requires a complete new set of hardware to support that software function (coming in MY2011.5) in addition to the new Nuance voice control (MY2011 CIC).

One of the few instances where a screen name dovetails with reality, it seems!

I'll wait to see if this mod pans out for other users first before I take the plunge...

I'm not interested in the BMW suite of Internet services nor the associated annual fee.

Anything in the works for bypassing that network in favor of whatever one can pick up via a cell phone?

There are several multimedia interfaces for the iDrive screen than can be used to display video. Other than that there is not that much that you can do to interface with the iDrive the way I think that you want with the current commercial devices available.

This is BMW proprietary code.
