I know this topic has been thrashed to death but just a quick bit of help would be great.

On a UK E60, I have a standard setup, (2 door speakers, 2 rear parcel shelf speakers + 2 subs under seat), and was wondering if the subs are wired directly to the head unit or do they have the small amp in the boot.

Why don't you open the boot up and see for yourself. If you see a small silver box on the left hand side then you have the Hi-Fi option and the subs are powered via that amp else the subs are connected in parallel to the front door speakers driven directly from the HU.

If you definitely have the UK spec standard stereo, then there is no Amp in the boot, they are wired from the head unit. As Bruce says, in parallel with the front door speakers.

Has anyone succesfully upggraded the UK 6 speaker system without spending a fortune? I've found a few threads about this but without conclusion.

Ideally I'd like to get somewhere near the sound of the Logic 7 in my E90 without too much money spent.

This looks like an option:

Perhaps coupled with some focal speakers to replace the factory ones...
